During the removal of protective coatings using concentrated acid bath solutions, Gas Turbine OEM’s can impose strict requirements for masking protection of sensitive machined surfaces and areas such as blade root serrations and this can be achieved by masking with materials such as synthetic wax and plastisol materials. For components with internal masking requirements (i.e., internal cavity coatings) this can be performed by injecting masking material directly into the cavities prior to acid bath insertion. Removal of masking materials (especially internal cavities) can be performed with the use of a burn off oven and is environmentally compliant method for the removal of these products.

Electrons burn off ovens use an industrial Pyrolysis process which thermally decomposes previously applied masking materials. Pyrolysis ovens applies heating to parts in an oxygen reduced atmosphere forcing a thermal reaction to occur and reduces materials to a mainly Carbon rich residue. Emissions liberated during the burn off process are directed through a secondary high temperature afterburner system which increases the thermal heat input to these gaseous products to within a range of 850°C to 900°C. Thermal heating of these gaseous products to an increased temperature converts them into H2O and CO2 by-products and all Electron burn off ovens will routinely comply with local state environmental emissions regulations.
